Plasmonic nanostructures can be used to convert optical energy into heat to change the local temperature of a material.

Such local changes of the temperature may be used to ask fundamental questions for example on Brownian motion in a liquid without thermal equilibrium on one side. But on the other side local temperature changes may also be utilize to switch light with light or to manipulate and trap individual objects and even molecules in solution.

This talk will present experimental results from this range of topics.
