“Connecting scales in tissue morphogenesist”

During biological development, the shaping, growth and patterning of tissues occur through the coordinated motion and information processing of thousands of cells. This raises the question of how the collective “macroscopic” behaviour at the scale of the tissue relates to “microscopic” rules at the cellular level. Here I will explore this relationship during morphogenetic processes in Drosophila development and in cancerous tumour growth. I will discuss the physics of active polar and nematic surfaces, and its relation to shape changes observed in developmental biology.
