Thomas Salez is a CNRS research associate in the condensed matter theory group of the Aquitaine Waves and Matter Laboratory (LOMA) at University of Bordeaux, as well as an assistant professor at Hokkaido University.

He obtained is PhD from ENS Paris, where he developed an experiment in the Kastler Brossel Laboratory to cool down atomic Fermi mixtures near the absolute-zero temperature, in ultra-high vacuum. He then joined the Gulliver Laboratory at ESPCI Paris, where he studied theoretically the behaviour of soft matter and polymers at the nanoscale.

In close collaboration with a broad and interdisciplinary international network, he currently uses statistical physics and applied mathematics in order to investigate the properties of amorphous condensed matter in confinement and at interfaces, at the boundary between the continuum and discrete descriptions of matter. He co-animates the CNRS research network (GDR 3535) on liquids at interfaces and belongs to the GI-CoRE global station for soft matter. Besides, he teaches graduate courses on soft matter at ICFP, ENS Paris and at University of Bordeaux, as well as an undergraduate course on statistical thermodynamics at ENSCBP, Bordeaux INP. Finally, he cofounded the MesoMat startup company in Canada that aims at producing novel self-assembled mesoscopic materials and smart components.
