Overview

Our activities focus on the interaction of light with condensed matter, liquid or solid. Among the various kinds of materials under study (such as liquids, crystals, glasses or metals) liquid crystals are prime choice model systems exploited for their inhomogeneous and anisotropic properties, in particular the appearance of topological defects. Our contributions find their place in a multidisciplinary environment that includes nonlinear phenomena, optics, and soft matter.

We are especially interested in situations where structured light meets structured matter, which generally involves spin-orbit interaction of light that corresponds to the coupling between the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of electromagnetic fields. This has application potential in the development of advanced solutions in various fields such as complex beam shaping, optical information and optical imaging.

Another aspect of our research concerns the mechanical effects of waves (light or sound) in the presence of angular momentum, including contactless handling of fluids, trapping and manipulation of microparticles and micro-mechanical systems. In particular, the interplay between the chirality of light and that of matter has a central place.
